Class 2 Renovations

I renovated my unit a couple years ago & didn’t require a Class 2 builder, when did this change occur?

The change is legislation took place in mid 2021. Now any renovation to a class 2 dwelling, such as unit or town house require the builder and designers involved to be Class 2 certified.

First step is to engage a designer who is also class 2 certified. If you are stuck on this we can assist with this. If you already have your designer selected and have your plans drawn up, the next step would be to select your builder who will provide, estimates and tender documents.

The construction process is the same as other renovations, the only difference is the requirement for both the architect or the building designer and the builder have to be class 2 certifed.

What are Class 2 builders?

To understand what a class 2 builder is, we must understand what a class 2 building is. All building have different classifications for certification purposes, there are 10 classifications in total.

Class 1 buildings are typically stand alone, single dwellings of residential nature. Class 1a are single dwelling being a detached dwelling such a townhouses or a row of attached dwellings.

Class 2 dwellings are typically multi-dwelling building such as apartment buildings. They are also single-story attached dwellings where there is shared property/spaced such as a carpark or basement.
